Vernon Sechriest


Vernon Sechriest is a distinguished leader in medicine and education, having served in several senior positions in the military, the private sector, and the federal government. He has educated hundreds of doctors and medical trainees as a teacher. When it comes to healthcare delivery, he is committed to quality improvement and research efforts.

Dr Sechriest earned his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins and went on to medical school at the University of Alabama. After graduating from the University of Minnesota's orthopedic surgery residency program, he attended New York City's Insall-Scott Kelly Institute for fellowship training in adult hip and knee reconstruction.

Loma Linda Veterans Affairs Medical Center Chief of Staff  Sechriest. He is responsible for ensuring that thousands of veterans in Southern California receive excellent, quality, and value care. In addition to his other duties, Dr Sechriest supervises and directs the whole medical team. He collaborates closely with other doctors to ensure that Primary Care, Specialty Care, and Mental Health services function seamlessly. Dr Sechriest is also accountable for monitoring clinical staff's adherence to the Joint Commission's standards, the hospital's policies, and other applicable rules and regulations.

Dr Sechriest is an accomplished healthcare professional with a demonstrated effective, ethical, and transformational leadership history. This leadership has taken the form of, among other things, the recruitment, management, and mentoring of a stellar clinical staff; the establishment of a culture of disciplined continuous improvement; the conception and implementation of programs to improve patient safety; and the introduction of new initiatives to expand access to healthcare. His approach to leading others is influencing and inspiring others to better carry out the organization's healthcare purpose.

Dr Sechriest's tenure as the Minneapolis VA Medical Center's Chief of Orthopedics and Podiatry spans from 2015–2021. (VAMC). Since the Minneapolis VAMC is a major teaching hospital, the University of Minnesota Department of Orthopedic Surgery appointed Vernon Sechriest as Adjunct Associate Professor. In this position, he successfully developed, coordinated, and supervised educational programs, clinical training, and research. The University of Minnesota's Department of Orthopedic Surgery recognized his leadership abilities and appointed him as an Adjunct Professor of Orthopedic Surgery in 2021. In addition,  Sechriest has been chosen as the recipient of the Educator of the Year Award by the graduating class of the University of Minnesota Orthopedic Residency in 2021.
